L is the part of the Building Regulations which addresses standards
of energy efficiency in buildings. The Government has fundamentally
revised Document L, elevating the acceptable levels of thermal
insulation in building materials, so that it can meet its commitments
to improve our environment.
Document L may become one of the most far-reaching pieces
of environmental legislation, affecting every element of the
UK Construction Industry. What this means to the consumer
is that from 1st April, 2002, the window INSTALLER will be
responsible to ensure the windows or doors that they are fitting,
comply with the new regulations and not the CONSUMER. However,
the consumer will have to be aware of these new regulations
to ensure their installer is cohering to them.
FENSA will be the registering body monitoring the window
industry. This standard will be to the window industry, what
the CORGI classification has become to the gas industry. Hopefully
this will bring about not just lower carbon emissions as the
government plans, but also the end of all the cowboy window
outfitters
